Having a Portfolio
One of the things that I really wanted to add to my books were images of the characters. After doing some digging and weighing my options, I decided that rather than putting them within the book, I would put them in a portfolio to see separately. The sketches are not all complete yet. I do have a first draft available of the main characters, Seth and Georgiana. These will change a little for the better, soon!
My process for doing my sketches was to first do a pencil drawing of their faces. I came up with their faces mostly by my experience with doing portraits, though I did have a few reference photos for certain details. However, the faces are original.
The next step was to trace the drawings onto pastel paper so that I could keep the original sketch should I not be pleased with the final results. The medium I used was pastels. Georgiana looks close to where she needs to be, but Seth desperately needs a different hair style! His beautiful cheekbones got concealed beyond repair…(may all the girls sigh at this point).
My portfolio will enter its next phase soon. I will be adding the updated versions of not only Seth and Georgiana, but other familiar characters as well.
As you can see, Seth’s face was very promising to start, but alas! Turns out black pastel is pretty much impossible to erase without tainting the color of the final product. Therefore, I need a new version of him.
I will say, I have never been more proud of shaping a hairstyle as with that final product of Georgiana. I am quite pleased with how she looks, but as the saying goes, “An artist is their own worst critic.” I can see details that I definitely want to fix, so there will be another version of her!
